se ba doo

June 6th, 2005

Everybody has a wish list of CD’s they’ve always wanted, but never got round to buying. This weekend I finally bought a CD I’ve wanted since 1994, Metallica Black.

When I was 13, I got hooked on heavy metal. Actually, to me heavy metal was synonymous with Metallica, and more specifically Metallica’s Black album. My brother Hannes made me a tape of this album, and soon me and my best friend Rian listened to virtually nothing else. There probably wasn’t a day that went by when I was in 7th grade that I didn’t listen to “The Unforgiven” or “Enter Sandman”.

I was so addicted to Metallica that I sometimes sang the songs when no one was looking, obviously with a bit of air guitar thrown in as well. One day when I was softly singing one of the tunes, my brother heard me. I was just coming to the chorus and I was passionately singing the words, “Se Ba Dooooooooooo ooo ooo”.

Suddenly my brother started laughing his butt off! I didn’t know why, but when he eventually stopped laughing, he said that if I’m gonna sing the songs I should at least get the words right. I argued with him that I knew every word on the CD and I was singing it correctly.

Then he asked me why the hell would James Hetfield sing something ridiculous like “Se ba doo”? Obviously I didn’t know, but I thought he probably had a good reason.

Anyways, my brother told me that the correct words were “Sad but True”! This made sense since that was the title of the song, but for some reason I never thought about that.

It’s 11 years later and I still love that album, actually I’ve been listening to nothing else for the past 2 days.

Here is my ultimate CD wish list from my childhood, add yours then go out and buy a CD.

1. Anthrax – Persistence of Time (When I started listening to other music again, I found out there were some pretty good heavy metal bands other than Metallica)
2. AC/DC – The Razor’s Edge (Thunderstruck!)
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magik (My brother ordered this CD from overseas. When he finally got it my mom read the lyrics and wanted to throw it in the trash. I guess my brothers careful explanations of the true meaning behind the music saved it.)
4. Beastie Boys – Check Your Head (Thanks to my friend Jimmy James, I became a fan of these three MC’s and one DJ.)
5. Reef – Glow (My friend Werner bought this album without really knowing what to expect, it turned out to be one damn addictive album for both of us during 9th grade.)

I’m off to bed… Enter Sandman.

Off the top of my head, here’s my “if I had to survive on a desert island and could only take 5 records with”.

    1. Tom Petty, Wildflowers: since the end of 1994, I’ve listened to this album almost every day of my life. That’s at least (365 days)*(10 years)*(14 songs) = 51 100 songs! That should tell you something.
    2. Bob Dylan, Blood on the Tracks: got a copy made from an old scratched vinyl. Digital doesn’t sound as good…
    3. Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Beautiful World: this one slowly grew on me.
    4. Pink Floyd, Animals: this record only has 5 songs. No less, no more.
    5. Anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty’s balls are so big, he needs a wheelbarrow to get around. Enough said.

One of the CDs that i’ve always wanted is the Great Expectations soundtrack. I recorded the tape long ago, but it disappeared and then I found it more than a year later in Herman’s room. It’s really quite good, but I can’t find it anywhere. Another CD I love is U2 Zooropa. Herman has the video of that tour and I love it.

Unfortunately my taste music differs from Herman’s. When someone asks you what is your favourite there is no wrong answer.

For me, since I was in Standard 6 I was a Darius Rucker fan. I have most of his CDs. I even purchased one of his CDs 3 times. The first one was ruined by my sister. She wrote all over it and scratched it severely. Her reply was: “It was an accident”. The second CD was stolen along with my car sound system – The man got me. So I purchased it for a third time. I call that dedication.
