uru why

June 13th, 2005

I’m not a big rugby fan, so this weekend I didn’t bother watching the test match between South Africa and Uruguay. If there’s going to be something on TV that involves 1 ball, 2 teams and more than 80 minutes of my undivided attention, then it better be FIFA World Cup or the EURO Cup.

However, as I heard on Sunday afternoon, the match turned out to be quite a spectacle. I’ll say it now; my deepest sympathies go out to the so called “National Team of Uruguay”. The Springboks beat Uruguay 134 – 3, an all time record for the Springboks.

Because this was such a rare occasion in the Springboks career, I decided to watch the highlights on Sunday afternoon. Now with a score that high, there were a lot of highlights to “highlight”. Don’t get me wrong, the Springboks played a great game, but the only thing worst than watching an 80 minute rugby match, is watching a nearly 80 minute long highlight show of a rugby match.

    Hey all

Yes, apparently the rugby was an all out spectacle, but nobody in Pretoria Boy’s High School watched the Springboks, on Saturday it was the 100th match between Boys High and Affies. Against all odds, Boys High won for only the seccond time in something like twenty years. Thus, the mother of all parties took place afterwards at the Old Boy’s club, those engineers would know, characters like Ray (civil) who made full use of the oppurtunity to have a party, and I ran into him at the old boys, having gained about 20kg’s since I last saw him (don’t mess with him), having a great time.

I just had to tell you guys that. It was unbelievably cool, almost as cool as winning the 95′ Rugby world cup. There was about 15000 people at the game, making it the largest school rugby game in the country.

Sorry Dave, jy het dit gemis. Dit was regtig baie cool.

    Cheers people

I feel really sorry for the Uru-guys. They came here filled with pride and dignity…”Maybe it’s our turn…to show the world what Uruguaians are made of”. How can anyone recover after such a heavy defeat? And why did the springboks actually play these guys? Anyone know?

The best rugby game ever played was Griekwas VS the Northern Freestate Greffons Vodacom Cup 2002. It was total chaos. If you listen carefully, individual spectator comments can be heard…captain of the Griekwas team “Spyker” (no offical name given) was leading his team against the Greffons in a fierce battle for who will be second last at the bottom of the table. Warren Cockrelle was always stuck in loose scrums. The prop forward of the Griekwas team looks like an extremely huge ugly baby (his whole body is shaven). He tackled Enricco Swartz so hard, the guys hair popped out of place (was tightly braided).

    Also, well done to PBHS…
