cuppa joe

April 7th, 2006

Everyone has their own beliefs/rituals/habits when it comes to drinking coffee, and the number of cups/mugs you drink per day. Some people can’t get by without at least a cup every hour or so, while other people have a prized cup early in the morning and that’s it. Other people, myself included go through cycles or phases of coffee drinking.

Upon starting at a new job, my coffee consumption displays a dramatic upward spike for a few weeks. This is because the coffee is different from the coffee at your previous job. Suddenly coffee tastes good again and I drink 2 or 3 cups a day. Then the newness starts to wear off. Gradually I start drinking fewer cups a day until finally I can’t ever stomach another cup of that particular coffee. No amount of money in the world could make me drink another cup of my previous employers coffee. Then again we had a lot of Swedes in the office, and they don’t drink coffee, they drink tar.

So a couple of months ago I started working at a new place, with new coffee. It was so good I referred to it as, super coffee. Well suffice to say I’m starting to get fed up with super coffee. Some people see coffee a thirst quencher, sort of like water. You just drink it because you need to drink something. I personally to see coffee more in the same light as wine. It’s a special drink that you want to savour and enjoy (And sometimes indulge, although this is more the case with wine than coffee). So once again I think I’ve had enough of the super coffee and I’m scaling down on my coffee at work so that when I drink a cup of coffee, I actually enjoy it.

To make this interesting, leave a comment on how many cups of coffee you drink everyday and whether you ever get fed up with the coffee at work or not…

I totally agree! Coffee is a wonder,, how could the same cup taste so bad if it was your best friend just the other day… Working in Kuwait for a couple of months… The first thing that I was told is NO Alchohol allowed within the country!!! Since I consider myself to be sober most of the time, I didn’t worry too much about it, I mean after all, if they don’t have beer they should have some decent coffee in the house… AAAaaagh! Unfortunately I was wrong again. These people stock coffee that tastes even worse that KoffieHuis… So tea please!

Yo! My sentiments exactly! Fortunately at work the guys buy a whole host of different types of coffee, and you can make a batch according to your own taste, the others will just have to live with it if they prefer tar, or Black-hole black, or Cerenkov blue (the ultimate strength).

Some people really are addicted though, they NEED their three cups a day. Off course, some of my buddies also said that coffee is bad and that if you drink coffee for longer than 2 years you can’t stop, and that if you do stop, you get a headache every day adn experience “withdrawal symptoms”.

Wrong losers! I tested your little theory, I stopped drinking all caffeine for a week, and took no sugar at all. Nothing happened. No pain, no headaches, no cold sweats, nothing. I was rather dissapointed. The only thing I noticed was that I was REALLY tired at night and fell asleep immediately.

So don’t feel guilty, enjoy that cuppa! It helps you work harder and faster. Coffee is like wine, and cigars, and leather and whiskey. It’s also like camping and rain, and winter nights, and DVD’s, and good books. It’s just a part of life, something humans do that we enjoy on some level.

In fact, I think I’m heading over to the kitchen right now to go and have the next cup!
