Disgrace – JM Coetzee

Disgrace – JM Coetzee

Ever since JM Coetzee won the Nobel Prize in Literature I’ve been wanting to read one of his books because apparently they must be good. Disgrace is probably his most popular novel so I picked up a second hand copy a while ago. Alfter reading this book I can say that JM Coetzee is a very good writer but I can also say that this was the most depressing book I have ever read and it wasn’t a particularly enjoyable read.

Next – Michael Chrichton

Next – Michael Chrichton

Michael Crichton has always based his novels around popular science topics of the day. Next is about stem cell research and the possibilities it holds for mankind. I flew through this book like I have through all his books in the past years, but somehow the form he was in when he wrote Jurassic Park has eluded him in his last few books. Cloning Dinosaurs seemed far fetched but he somehow made you believe it could be real and had you almost tear the pages to find out what will happen next. In Next, the birth of a talking “Humanzee” in a research lab and a parrot doing math problems just don’t turn out to be such an amazing story anymore.
